The Virtue of Charity (Sadaqah)

Gateway to Goodness and Blessings Charity, or “Sadaqah” in Arabic, is one of the noblest forms of worship in Islam. It represents a selfless act of giving and generosity that holds immense spiritual and worldly significance. Charity is not merely a charitable deed; it embodies the human spirit of compassion and the power to create positive change in the world. Charity holds a significant place in Islam, with God and Prophet Muhammad emphasizing its importance. The Quran highlights its virtues in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah, it is mentioned: “The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.” (Quran 2:261) Thus, God rewards those who give charity manifold. Moreover, charity is not solely about material benefits. It purifies the soul and elevates it spiritually. Allah says in the Quran: “Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [ Allah ‘s blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.” (Quran 9:103) Charity aids in strengthening faith and forging a closer bond with God. Furthermore, charity is linked to the purification of wealth and the enhancement of one’s sustenance. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, “Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status.” (Muslim) Thus, giving charity brings about blessings, prosperity, and divine favor. Charity is also encouraged to be given in secret. Prophet Muhammad said, “The charity given in secret extinguishes the anger of the Lord.” (Tirmidhi) This highlights the importance of sincerity in giving and the spiritual elevation that accompanies it. In conclusion, charity embodies the spirit of compassion and solidarity in Islam. It serves as a means to achieve goodness and blessings for both individuals and society. By giving zakat and engaging in acts of charity, Muslims are able to live according to the principles of justice and love that Islam encourages us to uphold.
